Arrive in Crete and transfer to the Mistral Hotel. A Welcome Meeting will be given by Vassilis before dinner to talk in more detail about the itinerary for your holiday.

Wednesday, May 11, 2022 - We begin the holiday with orange picking from the vast inland groves. Next stop Agia Lake for some nature watching with time to relax, have a coffee, and enjoy stunning views of the White Mountains. From here we visit the Botanical Gardens of Crete to discover hundreds of different types of fruit trees, herbs, flowers, medicinal and ornamental plants in this uniquely landscaped park at the foot of the White Mountains. Our lunch will be taken overlooking the valleys of olive and orange groves (www.botanical-park.com).

Thursday, May 12, 2022 - The day starts with a guided tour of a local olive oil soap-making studio before we travel inland for a tour of the Karavitakis Estate Winery (www.karavitakiswines.com). Located in the tiny village of Pontikiana, the estate has 150 acres of vineyards producing wines from local and international grape varietals. Our lunch will be at a local taverna.

Friday, May 13, 2022 - Today begins with a one and a half-hour walk to the retreat of Milia in the foothills of the White Mountains. Milia is an authentic 17th-century settlement that has been transformed into an eco-friendly tourist complex in a location boasting exceptional rugged beauty. Placed among plane trees, chestnut trees, and mountain tops, the area has a unique diversity. Here we enjoy lunch made from locally grown seasonal produce and made using traditional cooking techniques (www.milia.gr). (The minibus will be available for non-walkers).

Saturday, May 14, 2022 - This signature excursion takes us to the beautiful sandy beach of Falasarna on the west coast. Here, we have a few hours to swim, sunbathe, enjoy a refreshing drink and visit a nearby Hellenistic archaeological site. Then, we drive south to the idyllic, beachside village of Sfinari where the Baladakis family will serve a lunch of fresh fish, Kakavia (fish soup), organically produced vegetables, and plenty of village-style wine known as Marouvas. The Baladakis family will encourage you to watch the food being prepared in the kitchen. Everything (except the beer) is produced locally.

Sunday, May 15, 2022 - Today we indulge in Minoan history at the world-famous archaeological site of Knossos Palace (15 euros payable locally). See the story behind Sir Arthur Evans excavations at the beginning of the 20th Century and wonder over the 4,000-year-old Minoan artifacts that he discovered. We then visit the Archaeological Museum in the island's capital of Heraklion. There is no dinner at the hotel today, so we shall enjoy a sumptuous meal at a taverna situated on the historic Venetian Harbour in Chania.

Monday, May 16, 2022 - Prepare to be “wowed” with a visit to the Ancient Olive Tree of Vouves which is around 3,000 years old and the oldest in the world! After this, we visit Biolea, a family-owned company specializing in the artisan production of olive oil using millstones and presses (www.biolea.gr). From here, we drive on to the beautiful gorge of Deliana to see the stunning rock faces, endemic plant life, and varied birdlife. A packed lunch will be provided.

Wednesday, May 18, 2022 - An exclusive day trip to the village of Loutro on the south coast which is only accessible by boat. The day starts with a drive to historic Sfakia in the south made famous by the evacuation of Allied Troops during the Battle of Crete. Our private boat will take us the short journey along rugged coastline to secluded Sweetwater Bay for a swim in the Libyan Sea, sunbathe, and refreshments. From here, we move further along the coast passing dramatic cliffs and caves to the picturesque village of Loutro for a long, leisurely lunch at a waterside taverna.

Thursday, May 19, 2022 - Your last day will be a relaxed affair within the hotel grounds. We invite you to join Vassilis for a wine-tasting lunch of traditional Greek cuisine and share in our passion for Cretan and Greek wines. Lunch is long and leisurely and will be followed by a cooking class in the hotel kitchens where you will make stuffed tomatoes, stuffed peppers, and Cretan small cheese pies.
